Very well written. I think you're generally right about this, but I might suggest the good explanations appeal to a common sense understanding. The real power of that, as I see it, is that it simply cannot be dismissed. When a person finds themselves unable to dismiss such claims, they must contend with them. That may bring many to see with their own eyes.
In the 60s through early 2000s there was a theory only stupid, uneducated rubes were unapologetically Christian. Being an atheist was a way of saying I’m smarter than the average bear. Oh the Mainline Prots were able to keep a toe in both worlds by abandoning the Bible and the teaching of Christ. Instead of the salvation of souls, churches focused on “women’s rights” aka abortion as well as jumping on the gay marriage bandwagon. We are so much more enlightened than two thousand years of wisdom teaching.
I think the vibe shift is that you aren’t necessarily considered a knuckle dragging Neanderthal if you are open about your faith. Dissing Christianity is a loser politically.
I haven’t listened to this Rogan podcast but I will. Although I am Catholic I respect the evangelicals who are open about their faith. They give the “Frozen Chosen” a challenge to quit hiding their faith beneath a bushel basket.
I don’t know what you mean by “Mormons have their own brand of apologetics, but it doesn’t take too much reading around to see that it’s a pale facsimile of what Christians can offer.” Could you elaborate?
Before Huff's generation, a popular potted narrative was "Christendom was getting along just fine, then the Enlightenment happened, and every body decided they were individuals, which God hates, and Jesus has been wringing his hands for 325 years."

Wonderfully written. Clearly presented. Very helpful. Well done.

Seems like Aslan is on the move…

The People Who've Read Too Much Charles Taylor and Alasdair MacIntyre brand of potted narrative is especially annoying.
