Your writing encapsulates many of my thoughts and highlighted events that I hadn’t considered in view of the Saturday’s events. Long before, when the lawsuits against Trump were piling up, I mentioned to my husband that the only way the Dems could get him out of the race if the lawsuits didn’t go their way, was to kill him. I wasn’t making a joke nor did I seriously think that they would do that, but it felt like a remote possibility.
I tried to teach my students that words have power, meaning and consequences.
In today’s internet obsessed environment, anything said certainly cannot be unsaid. It’s recorded for posterity whether we like it or not.
Keep up your excellent observations of the events, images, words that affect us.
Thanking God is always appropriate for he is always working all things together for good to those he has called according to his purposes. He cares for his children!
Great article. Thanks for articulating so well the random thoughts swirling aroud us. Funnily enough, this is a very shared moment, in that we all dodged that bullet. We would all have suffered the consquences had it not missed.
Like many who responded before me, I was in nodding agreement with your thoughtful post.
Young people who don’t remember 1981 have lived in a far more rancorous time, and maybe their entire lives have been influenced by screens.
I came to Conservatism after graduating from college and working a few years. I definitely do not recall the kind of hateful personal attacks and broken friendships and family relationships based on a political disagreement. My parents, liberal atheist Democrats were not estranged from rock robbed Republican parents. They had friends who didn’t share their politics. I never knew the political side of my teachers or the guy at the mom and pop grocery store. We cared about other, more important things.
Now for many politics is their religion. They can’t get past it to see the person on the other side of the aisle.
All I can say, watching this unfold in western PA, is that it feels like a local tragedy that incidentally spilled over onto the national scene. The killer worked at the nursing facility where my dad spent several weeks last year and could easily have served him some of his meals if their time there overlapped. Won’t ever know for sure.
This is a powerful "further up" piece. I hope it rises above some of the violent rhetoric on both sides to calm the wind and waves of our present political environment...
I seek something similar in my post for today...coming from a different angle:
I appreciate your reviewing some details of the response to the attempt on President Reagan’s life; at the time I had no TV, and never read up on it later.
The contrast to our own time, as you so aptly highlight, reveals how much we have lost. I’m not hopeful of the restoration of civilization — but this is the time God has given us to live in, and by His grace we can go on living and being thankful.
I’m thankful for your perspective and your writing. ❤️
This piece is really excellent. Thank you.
Thank YOU for reading!
Great article- excellent writing and heartfelt- you articulated everything in my brain very well, lol! Thank you!
I try! Thanks for reading. :)
You really summed things up nicely. I wish I had a more substantial comment, but I just found myself going, “ Yup. Yup. Yeah. That too. Yup.”
Nice work.
Thank you sir!

Excellent and fair summary
Thank you for your thoughtful writing Bethel. Perspective like this is difficult to find.
That's kind, thanks William!

Really good; thanks, Bethel.

Man, a good but very sad way to think about it.

How heartfelt and sweet! Thanks for sharing your story.
Thanks for sharing yours...writing is good therapy isn't it?
Do you know anyone who is writing about a Harris-Biden ticket? What are your thoughts?
My thoughts are I think they'll lose either way.
I have been writing to whitehouse.gov daily for a couple of weeks with the suggestion. If you have time for just one more of my posts, here's why:
