I have read that a lot of young guys go down radicalization rabbit holes in the military. That seems to have been where he made the flip. There was a long read I should have linked in here which discussed that a bit, though it still left lots of questions unanswered.
Not a lot different than going off to college. A person has to choose to make good connections or they are apt to get swept away; they are suddenly in a most vulnerable state.
